Crystals and Minerals to complement your inner self

Shopping for gifts or simply looking for inspiration? Then drop in at The Crystal People, specialist crystal shops and purveyors of high-quality sacred items, in Christchurch and Petone.

The Crystal People opened its doors in Christchurch back in 2007, then on Jackson Street, in the heart of Petone, late in 2009. Following the Christchurch earthquakes, the Christchurch store was closed in 2011, and reopened again in 2013 in its new location. The stores have become favourite destinations for avid rock hounds and seekers of superior personal development and metaphysical goods.

Veteran amateur crystal hunter and The Crystal People co-owner Glen Tregurtha says people often just drop by for a nice sit down and chat, to soak in the atmosphere, or absorb the energy. "Whatever their reason for visiting, we welcome the opportunity to talk about the crystals, fossils and metaphysical items we have unearthed," Glen says.

Fate has proved to be a curious thing for Glen; he recounts how after an early start at trading in crystals and minerals at the age of 12, friends and family always said he would grow up and open a rock shop.

"For years I denied the likelihood of that! As it turned out, fate had other ideas and late in 2007 I found myself inside a little shop in Christchurch, painting the walls green."

Along with the core product range of crystals, minerals, jewellery, rocks and fossils, the shop stocks Himalayan crystal salt lamps, books, incense, pendulums, baltic amber teething necklaces, and more.

The Crystal People are able to offer unique items at modest prices as most of the stock is sourced directly from overseas suppliers, either from reputable wholesalers or on travels to hand-pick genuinely intriguing and beautiful items. Glen believes buying crystals to be a great excuse to travel the world. "We've been to some spectacular and remote places to find items that are authentic, high quality, and good value."

His passion for rocks and minerals can be traced back to 1987, when, on a family holiday in the North Island, he purchased a small piece of amethyst. His buying and collecting continued, and six years later, at the age of twelve, Glen began selling crystals, with a little help from his mother, Deryn.

Starting out with just a few bits and pieces on a table, he and Deryn gradually built up an impressive range and equally impressive reach, selling at markets and shows up and down the South Island. "We now have one of the country's most extensive ranges of crystals and minerals, including some very rare pieces. We try to price our goods as low as possible so that they are affordable to all, especially children; I remember well what it was like having big eyes and a small pocket! We often get asked about new crystals and minerals; if we don't have it in stock then we're almost always able to source things through our networks."
